Rare signed sepia photo, youthful image, wearing a suit, inscribed to RKO Studios publicity head Rutgers Neilson
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To my pal/Rutgers Neilson/Sincerely/Irving Cummings". Sepia 8x10. Irving Cummings (1888-1959) appeared in his first Broadway play in 1909, and was part of Lillian Russell's theater company. He had prominent roles in many silent films of the 1910s. (An ink note in unknown hand on verso cites his forthcoming appearance with Ethel Barrymore in An American Widow (1917). After a role in Buster Keaton's first feature-length film, The Saphead (1920), Cummings turned his talents to directing. His greatest achievements came in the sound era, including an Oscar nomination for his directing of In Old Arizona (1939) and production of many of the big Twentieth Century-Fox film musicals of the 1930s and 1940s. He was married to actress Ruth Sinclair. Corners creased. Right edge slightly silvered. Minor creasing, not visible head-on. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso, no show-through. Otherwise, fine condition.
