IRVING MANSFIELD
He signs a typed letter from the Savoy Hotel, London, to entertainment
columnist Louis Sobol, explaining that he misses the delis of New York
City.
Typed Letter signed: "Irving Mansfield", 6¼ x 7¾. London,
undated. On letterhead of the Savoy Hotel to Louis Sobol. In full: "A
whole gang of us were stomping around the Savoy this afternoon and we thought of
the idea of knocking off some en masse greetings to you. London is a great city
but we'd give anything for a fast hot pastrami sandwich or a bowl of Lindys or
Daves borscht. I might mention that Hannen Swaffer has really gone Hollywood and
is now wearing a clean collar. Cheerio. [signature] If you quote any of
these letters, don't use any of Mort Downey's verbatim ... [ellipses in
original] There's a line in it that isn't quite nice." TV producer and
publicist Irving Mansfield (1908-1988) was married for 35 years to
author Jacqueline Susann, and spent much of his career publicizing her
novels and producing the film versions. The marriage worked despite Susann's
many infidelities; Mansfield was adept at generating good publicity for her and
her books. Susann died in 1974; Irving co-authored a memoir, Life with
Jackie, in 1983. Mansfield didn't rely entirely on his wife for his success.
He produced several other TV shows for CBS beginning in the late 1940s,
including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, and the Morey Amsterdam and
Frank Sinatra shows. Louis Sobol was a veteran New York entertainment columnist.
It was characteristic of Mansfield the publicist to send him a friendly note
with some useful tidbits for his column. Soiled and toned. Creased at upper and
lower left edge. Ink from signature bled through to verso. Good
condition.
