Signature: "Irving Stone/Oct 14, 1965" and on verso "Harry
Golden, Charlotte N.C. 12-8-65", 1p, 7x9¼ album leaf. Below Stone's

(1903-1989) wrote fictionalized portraits of American First Families,
including Andrew and Rachel Jackson (The President's Lady, 1951) and
Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln (Love is Eternal, 1954) and John and
Abigail Adams (Those Who Love, 1965). Other Stone novels focused on
historical figures include Vincent van Gogh (Lust for Life, 1934) and
Michelangelo (The Agony and the Ecstasy, 1965). New York stockbroker
Herschele Goldhirsch was convicted of mail fraud in 1929, after losing clients'
money in unsuccessful speculations. Imprisoned for three years - he was later
pardoned by President Nixon - he found a new career while editing the prison
newsletter. Changing his name to Harry GOLDEN (1903-1981), he
moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he soon founded his own newspaper,
"The Charlotte Israelite". His humorous newspaper columns, lampooning
segregation and racism and waxing nostalgic about New York's Lower East Side,
became nationally popular. His writings were published in fifteen books,
including bestsellers Only in America (1958), For 2-cents Plain
(1959) and Enjoy! Enjoy! (1960). He was a popular guest on TV talk
shows. Slightly frayed edge where page was removed from a book. Ink page numbers
(unknown hand) in lower corners. Each signature shows through lightly.
