IRVING THALBERG
He signed this $97.50 check from the Louis B. Mayer Studios in 1923, the year he produced his first film. Countersigned by his studio manager, M.E. Greenwood
Check signed: "I Thalberg", and countersigned, "M.E. Greenwood", 8½x3½. Los Angeles, California, 1923 July 2. Check #2699, drawn on the account of Louis B. Mayer Studios at Los Angeles Trust and Savings Bank, payable to Lichtig & Rockwell. Movie producer Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) was dubbed "the boy wonder" for his successes at Universal Pictures and then M-G-M. A perfectionist, he encouraged multiple retakes in order to get a scene right. The modest Thalberg refused to allow his name to be included in the film credits. Dogged by illnesses throughout his life, Thalberg produced such famous films as Grand Hotel (1932), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), The Good Earth and A Day at the Races (both 1937). His widow was actress Norma Shearer. In 1937, the Academy of Motion Pictures named its memorial award in his honor. Thalberg signed this check in the year he produced his first film, Merry-Go-Round. M.E. Greenwood was a studio manager for MGM who worked closely with Thalberg. Before he took on the stressful job of managing profits and spending costs at MGM, Greenwood was an Arizona faro dealer. Small hole left of center section. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
