IRVING THALBERG
"Boy wonder" producer Irving Thalberg signed this document, typed on MGM stationery, in 1924 to loan actress Gertrude Olmsted to Universal Pictures for their production of California Straight Ahead.
Document signed "I Thalberg" as Vice President of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation and a representative of Universal Pictures Corporation. Pencil marks in unknown hand. 2 pages, 8½x11, single-sided sheets, on MGM stationery, with two binder holes at top edge. Sept. 20, 1924. Thalberg signed this document to confirm an agreement to lend Gertrude Olmsted to Universal for their 1925 comedy California Straight Ahead. According to this agreement, Universal would pay Olmsted, who was to play Betty Brown, $312.50 per week ($250 plus a 25 percent commission) and give her billing in the movie credits above everyone but co-star Reginald Denny. Thalberg was an uncredited producer on three movies in 1924: His Hour, He Who Gets Slapped and Greed. American movie producer Thalberg (1899-1936) was dubbed "the boy wonder" for his successes at Universal Pictures and then MGM. A perfectionist, he encouraged multiple retakes in order to get a scene right. The modest Thalberg refused to allow his name to be included in the film credits. Dogged by illnesses throughout his life, Thalberg produced such famous films as Grand Hotel (1932), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), The Good Earth and A Day at the Races (both 1937). His widow was actress Norma Shearer. In 1937, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences created the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to honor "creative producers whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production"; recent recipients include Dino de Laurentiis (2007), Clint Eastwood (1994), George Lucas (1991), Billy Wilder (1987) and Stephen Spielberg (1986). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Staple holes, paper clip impression, rust stains and light nick at top edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
