IRWIN SHAW. TLS: "Irwin Shaw," 1p,
8¼x10½. Klosters Suisse (Switzerland), 1979 January 28. To Mr.
Norbutt. In part: "Thank you for your letter, coming out of the
Brooklyn in which I was reared and educated. Being a Jew, I suffered from many
disadvantages, too, since in those distant years so many avenues of advancement
were closed to me. I knew the Bedford Stuyvesant area very well, as the first
girl I was in love with lived there and we would often walk to her home after
classroom hours were over in Brooklyn College, which we both attended and which
was then situated in the Borough Hall section of downtown Brooklyn. Literature
then was an escape for me from the dreadful realities of the Depression, a
source of infinite amusement, a means of ascertaining what my values must be in
relation to the world around me, a method by which I could form my own moral
code and judgment of the people around me and the intentions and integrity of
the people who made the laws under which I lived and the institutions which I
was ready to defend and those I was prepared to attack. It also inspired me to
create on my own..." Works of novelist, short story writer and playwright
