Inscribed Photograph Signed: "To Herb/Isabel Allende" in black ink. B/w. 8x10. Isabel
Allende (b. 1942) is considered one of the first successful women novelists in Latin
American. She writes in the "magical realism" tradition and is well-known for her popular
Spanish novels, including The House of the Spiritsand City of the Beasts. Allende also
helped others escape the brutal junta Augusto Pinochet, leaving Chile only when she herself
received death threats. Allende's writing is based in part on her experiences, which are
extensive indeed. Born in 1942 in Lima, Peru, her literary career included translating English
romance novels into Spanish in Chile. She was fired from this job after making unauthorized
changed to make the heroines more intelligent and independent. She was married to her
second husband, lawyer and novelist William Gordon from 1988 to 2015. Fine condition.
