Autograph letter signed: "I. Geoffroy St. Hilaire", in black ink, 1 page, 5¼x8¼. April 18. To “Sir”. In French, translated in full:The Society for [one word difficult to decipher] and the acclimatization of useful animals, of which you are one of the founding members, the [one word difficult to decipher], to organize it, tomorrow February 3rd Tasasse Street No 12 at 3./ I am happy to [one word difficult to decipher] a contest so esteemed that the [one word difficult to decipher] gained by burgeoning society, and I won't congratulate you on the [one word difficult to decipher] of the relationship it has established between us”. Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1861) was a French zoologist. The son of French naturalist Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, he initially showed promise as a mathematician but later transferred to natural history and medicine, becoming an assistant to his father by 1824. He began teaching zoology at the Athénée after 1829, the beginning of several academic positions Saint-Hilaire served in during his career. The zoologist published several great works during his life, most important being his Histoire générale et particulière des anomalies de l'organisation chez l'homme et les animaux (1832-1837). Slight surface creases. Lightly toned. Corners moderately worn and creased. Pencil notes and ink notes (unknown hand) on top margin. Normal mailing folds. Left edge slightly frayed. Paper loss on top left. Otherwise, fine condition.
