ISRAEL ZANGWILL
Handwritten letter from Zangwill to British author Francis Henry Gribble, saying that he had written an article about his recent book but that it has been delayed. He goes on to say that he found the book " more amusing for it's environment than convincing for it's character". Extremely rare!
Autograph letter signed: "I Zangwill", in black ink, 5½x3½ affixed to 9¾x4½ sheet. Original handwritten address affixed to verso. Venice, Italy. April 22. In part: "Dear Gribble, I wrote a little about your book but it got postponed & cannot appear for some months in the P.M.M. This is not altogether a disadvantage to a book. I found it more amusing for its environment than convincing for the central character". English playwright and novelist Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) wrote many novels on Jewish themes, including The Children of the Ghetto (1892), The King of the Schnorrers (1894) and Dreamers of the Ghettos (1898). He had tremendous American success with The Melting Pot (1908), a drama of ethnic fusion in America. Zangwill joined the Zionist cause of Herzl, but broke with Herzl to establish a rival Territorialist movement, aimed at creating a Jewish homeland in any available territory, not necessarily in Israel. Heavily toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Slightly soiled. Stray ink marks across. Pencil and ink notes (unknown hand) on letter and affixed sheet. Unsigned book clippings on affixed sheet. Some areas of ink faded, but clearly legible. Edges irregular on affixed sheet. Otherwise, fine condition.
