J. BENNETT JOHNSTON, JR.
Senator from Louisiana sends a letter addressing school reform in his state.
Typed letter signed: "Bennett Johnston Jr ", in black ink, 1 page, 8½x11. Washington, D.C., September 20, 1974. On his Senate Letterhead, Washington, to "Dear Mr. Goldberg", Mr. Herman R. Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for Equal Educational Opportunity Office of Education Department of Health, Education and Welfare, in full: "This is in further reference to the inquiry I made in behalf of Mr. O. L. Harper, Superintendent of the Morehouse Parish Schools, of Bastrop, Louisiana on July 9. In checking my files I am unable to find any reply from your office since the report which you sent to me on July 16, in which you indicated that Mr. Edward Baca, Regional Commissioner, for the Dallas Region, would be investigating the case. Any further indication you can give me now about the disposition of this matter would be helpful and most appreciated. With kindest regards and best wishes,". John Bennett Johnston, Jr. (b.1932) served as a United States Senator from Louisiana from 1972 to 1997. An effective lobbyist, he chaired the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee (1987-1995) and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (1975-1976). In 2010, Johnston received the National Parks Conservation Association Centennial Leadership Award. Normal mailing folds. Slightly toned and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
