Signature: "J. C. Penney", 5x3 piece of paper. James Cash Penney (1875-1971), who opened his first store in 1902 in Wyoming, had a chain of 34 stores generating sales of $2 million by 1912. The following year, his Golden Rule stores were incorporated as J.C. Penney, Inc., which moved its operations to New York City to be closer to major suppliers in 1914. Penney, who semi-retired in 1946, assumed the title of Honorary Chairman. Today, there are over 1,100 J.C. Penney stores employing more than 290,000 associates in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico.
