Typed Letter signed: "J.C. Penney", 1 p, 8½x11. On personal letterhead. New York, N.Y., 1969 April 14. To Theron C. Liddle, Managing Editor, Deseret News, Salt Lake City, Utah. In full: "I am in receipt of your letter seeking my permission to use the following quotation in a publication you are preparing: No one today can seriously study the life of Abraham Lincoln without being - in one way or another - emancipated. - J. C. Penney. You have my permission to use this quotation. Thinking that you may be interested in reading a selection of reprints of talks I have made in the past and other literature I have available, I am herewith enclosing a selection of them. With very best wishes for the success of your endeavor, I am, Sincerely." Penney (1875-1971), who opened his first store in 1902 in Wyoming, had a chain of 34 stores generating sales of $2 million by 1912. The following year, his Golden Rule stores were incorporated as J.C. Penney, Inc., which moved its operations to New York City to be closer to major suppliers in 1914. Penney, who semi-retired in 1946, assumed the title of Honorary Chairman. Today, there are approximately 1,100 J.C. Penney stores employing more than 290,000 associates in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. Staple holes and ¼" vertical tear in upper left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
