He signs a typed 1950 letter accepting thanks for giving a subscription to
the Christian Herald.
Typed Letter signed: "J. C. Penney", 1 page, 7¼x10½. New York City,
1950 January 16. On personal letterhead to Mr. and Mrs. James Dollings,
Colusa, California. In full: "Your note of thanks for the subscription
to Christian Herald which I sent to you was among the mail held for my return
from a winter holiday on the West Coast. I am happy to know that you are pleased
to receive this publication, and thank you for your expression of appreciation.
With best wishes and kindest regards, I am Sincerely yours". James Cash
Penney (1875-1971), who opened his first store in 1902 in Wyoming,
had a chain of 34 stores generating sales of $2 million by 1912. The following
year, his Golden Rule stores were incorporated as J.C. Penney, Inc., which moved
its operations to New York City to be closer to major suppliers in 1914. Penney,
who semi-retired in 1946, assumed the title of Honorary Chairman. Penny
contributed both articles and financial support to the Christian Herald
magazine. Today, there are approximately 1,100 J.C. Penney stores employing
more than 290,000 associates in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico. Fold
crease, not near signature. Light stain at upper left corner. Otherwise, fine
condition.
