Hoover stated in this letter that he can't comment on the reliability of any information that Morris has received, but reminds him that "It is the responsibility of all loyal Americans to promptly report any information relating to the internal security of this country to the FBI".
Typed letter signed "J. Edgar Hoover" in blue ink as Director of the FBI. 1 page, 7¾x10½. July 28, 1959. Addressed to Mr. Robert Morris, Security Representative, Douglas Aircraft Company, Inc., Santa Monica Division, Sacramento, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Morris: Your letter dated June 19, 1959, directed to the Central Intelligence Agency has been referred to this Bureau. While I would like to be of assistance to you, the function of the FBI as a fact-gathering agency does not extend to furnishing evaluations or comments concerning the character or integrity of any individual, organization or publication. I regret, therefore, that I am unable to comment upon the reliability of the information you have received. I can assure you, however, that it is the responsi-bility of all loyal Americans to promptly report any information relating to the internal security of this country to the FBI which has the responsibility for the investigation of subversive activities and the correlation of all information pertaining thereto with other agencies of the Government. Consequently, in the event you receive any additional information which you believe to be of interest to the FBI, you should feel free to communicate with me directly or with the Special Agent in Charge of our San Francisco Office located at 422 Federal Office Building, Civic Center, San Francisco 2, California Sincerely yours, John Edgar Hoover Director." Hoover (1895-1972, born John Edgar Hoover in Washington, DC) served as the first Director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972. During his 48-year term, he restored order to the department and established the world's largest fingerprint file and the FBI Academy. The FBI fought organized crime in the Prohibition era. Under his direction, the FBI also infiltrated the American Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan and other subversive organizations. It also conducted counterintelligence during WWII and the Cold War. By the 1970s, Hoover came under frequent public criticism for his authoritarian administration, but his power was so great that no President dared to remove him. Lightly toned and creased. Light water spotting of signature. 2 file nicks at blank left edge. Staple holes and rust stain at upper left corner. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
