J. HOWARD McGRATH
TLS on his Senate letterhead
Typed Letter signed: "J. Howard McGrath" as US Senator, 1 page, 8x10½, affixed to 8½x11 page. Washington, D.C., 1947 March 13. On his Senate letterhead to Ralph Errington Ward, Melrose, Massachusetts. In full: "I have your recent letter requesting an autograph and I trust the signature on this letter will serve. Sincerely yours". James Howard McGrath (1903-1966) was Governor of Rhode Island (1941-1945) and US Senator (1947-1949). As Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1947-1949), he helped organize President Truman's upset re-election victory, which also restored Democratic majorities in Congress. He became Truman's Attorney General (1949-1952), but was asked to resign after he refused to cooperate with his own Department's plan to investigate corruption by examining the personal financial records of other Cabinet officers. (McGrath was not himself accused of corruption.) From the private collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
