J.L. GARVIN
Signed letter of the revolutionary journalist, editor of London's
The Observer
Typed letter signed: "J.L. Garvin" in black ink. 1 page, 7x9.
23rd April 1926, London, England. On his letterhead as Editor, to "My dear
Mr. Dawson", Headington, Oxford, in full: "I am afraid we are
simply crowded out. It is the height of the season and do what we will we cannot
find room enough for the British books which attract attention. So I could not
possibly publish a notice of Oncken for a number of weeks. If you could manage
to get a review into 700 words, I might be able to get it in sometime in June.
You know what the pressure is. I am very sensible indeed of the importance of
the volumes, as privately I keep in close touch with German historical
publishing. With thanks, Yours very truly". James Louis Garvin
(1868-1947) became the editor of London's historic Sunday newspaper
The Observer in 1908. In the early years Garvin transformed the
newspaper into his political platform, gaining nationwide supporters as a
Unionist. During World War I Garvin he used his friendly ties with Winston
Churchill and First Sea Lord Admiral John Fisher to give his readers first
access to War news. An editor, he also served as editor of Pall Mall Gazette
(1912-1915). He was a columnist for the Sunday Express and the
Daily Telegraph shortly before his death. Normal mailing folds. Slightly
creased. Corners creased. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
