FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Bishop (b.1936), an American immunologist and microbiologist,
shared a Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1989 with Harold E. Varmus "for their
discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes". In other words, they discovered that
retroviruses can cause malignant tumors. Bishop, who won the National Medal of Science
in 2003, has been on the faculty of the University of California/San Francisco since 1968, its
chancellor since 1998. Slightly rippled. Light diagonal glue stain at blank right margin. Fine
condition.
