Autograph Letter signed: “J.P. Dickie”, in black ink, 6½x10. No place, 28 April 1934. Leaflet
announcing the release of his book The Coal Program included. Embossed address on
stationery: “15, Pollard Hill South,/ S.W. 16.”. Addressed to: “Chief Marine Supl/ Cunard
White Star Line,/ Liverpool”. To “Dear Sir”. In full: “As the author of a book on coal just recently
published, I have followed with very great interest the experiment which your company has been
making with colloidal fuel. I referred to it in “The Coal Problem”, but as this was published in
Nov. last, I could only do so briefly + in general terms./ I am now engaged on a smaller work on oil
from coal + its related problems, + if the results of your experiment are not confidential, I should
like to refer both to the method of producing the fuel + the measure of success attending its use./ As
a marine engineer myself, I am particularly interested in this aspect of our national fuel problem,
+ if you can give me the information necessary to enable me to refer to it I shall be grateful./ Yours
sincerely” J.P. Dickie was a British author known for his study of problems presented by
reliance on coal for fuel. His best-known work, The Coal Problem, was published in 1936
by Methuen, London. Binding holes at left edge. Corners and edges worn and creased. Pencil
note at lower right-hand corner. Otherwise, fine condition. Two items.
