Typed Letter signed: "J. Palmer Gaillard. Jr." as Mayor, 1 page, 7x10½. Charleston, South Carolina, 1974 November 25. On official letterhead to Selwyn Gamble, Senatobia, Mississippi, in full: "Thank you for your letter of November 22nd and the Christmas card enclosed. I appreciate your kind words and I enclose herewith for your collection the items you requested. [Items not included.] With kind regards and best wishes, I am, Sincerely". J. Palmer Gaillard, Jr. (1980-2006), a US Navy fighter pilot during World War II, was a member of the Charleston, South Carolina City Council (1951-1959) before being elected to the first of four terms as Mayor (1959-1975). The Gaillard Municipal Auditorium in the city is named in his honor. From 1975-1977, Gaillard was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Reserve Affairs. Thereafter he served as Vice President of the Ruscon Corp. until his 1985 retirement. Mailing fold through "J" of J. Fine condition.
