Photograph signed: "J.R. Atkinson", in black felt tip, B/w, 13½x11¼. James Robert Atkinson (1916-2008) was a radar pioneer, deputy-director of research at the nuclear establishment at Dounreay and deputy-director of the Institute of Offshore Engineering at Heriot-Watt University. After graduating from St. John's College, Cambridge in 1938, Atkinson began working at the Air Ministry Research Establishment in Bawdsey Manor, where he worked on Cathode Ray Tubes and Chain Home Radar stations. In 1958, the physicist took charge of the testing reactor at UKAEA Douneay. Edges slightly worn. Lightly creased at corners. Fine condition.
