J. WILLIAM FULBRIGHT
Signature in ink on a card with printed border.
Printed card signed in ink: "JW Fulbright" in black ink. 5x3 card
with ornate printed border. J. William Fulbright (1905-1995), a football
star at the University of Arkansas and then a Rhodes Scholar, became the
youngest President of the University of Arkansas in 1939. After serving
one term in the US House of Representatives (1943-1945), Fulbright
represented Arkansas as a Democrat in the US Senate for 5 full terms
(1945-1975). He chaired the Foreign Relations Committee longer than anyone in
history (1959-1974). An early critic of Senator Joseph McCarthy and a
strong opponent of US involvement in Vietnam, he also created the
Fulbright international exchange scholarships. Ironically, since he had long
been opposed by his Party's right wing, his loss to Governor Dale Bumpers in the
1974 Democratic primary proved his vulnerability in the other direction.
Fulbright, a segregationist who signed the Southern Manifesto and
filibustered civil rights legislation, lost his seat when newly enfranchised
black voters cast their votes against him. Lightly worn on corners. Lightly
soiled around edges. Ink note on verso (unknown hand). Otherwise, fine
condition.
