JACK BENNY
The legendary comedian signs a still from his 1936 film, College
Holiday.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Harry/All good wishes/Jack". B/w,
10x8. Still from the 1936 film, College Holiday, which starred Benny
as J. Davis Bowster, and co-starred George Burns and Gracie Allen, Martha Raye
and Leif Erikson. ©1936, Paramount Pictures, Inc. Captioned at lower margin,
which has "1936" written in unknown hand to right of caption. In 1936, Benny
was also seen on the big screen as Jack Carson in The Big Broadcast of
1937, which also co-starred Burns & Allen and Raye. Stamped: "Nov 27
1936" on verso. Vaudeville comedian Jack Benny (1894-1974), born Benjamin
Kubelsky, hosted a popular radio show from 1933, moving The Jack Benny
Program smoothly to TV (1950-1965). His comic image as a tone-deaf,
penny-pinching bachelor contradicted the real Benny, a philanthropist,
devoted husband and competent violinist. He appeared in over 25 movies, the most
critically acclaimed being To Be Or Not To Be (1942). Creased at blank
margins and corners, tack holes at corners. Surface creased, touching writing.
Ink and pencil notes, collector's stamps and paper remnant on verso (no show
through). Overall, fair condition.
