JACK BENNY
He inscribes a publicity photo of himself as Charley's Aunt.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Harry/All Good Wishes/Jack
Benny". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7x9 (one surface). Publicity photo for the
film Charley's Aunt (1941), captioned at lower margin. Vaudeville
comedian Benny hosted a popular radio show from 1933, moving The Jack Benny
Program smoothly to TV (1950-1965). His comic image as a tone-deaf,
penny-pinching bachelor contradicted the real Benny, a philanthropist, devoted
husband and competent violinist. He appeared in over 25 movies, the most
critically acclaimed being To Be Or Not To Be (1942). Date "1941" written
in ink (unknown hand) at lower margin. Lightly creased and soiled, touching
writing but not signature. Tack holes at corners (light rust stain at upper
right corner), upper left corner torn away. Stamps, ink notations (unknown hand)
and mounting remnants on verso (no show-through).
