JACK BENNY and VIKKI CARR
The comedian signs and the singer endorses a check for $514.
Check signed: "Jack Benny", 8½x3¼. Beverly Hills, California, 1965
July 29. Check No. 10627, drawn on his account at the Bank of America in
Beverly Hills, payable to Vikki Carr for $514.30. Endorsed:
"Vikki Carr". Check signed six weeks before the cancellation of
Benny's NBC television show, which last aired on September 10, 1965. Former
vaudeville comedian Jack Benny (1894-1974) had hosted a popular radio show from
1933, moving The Jack Benny Program smoothly to TV. The Jack Benny
Program was televised on CBS from October 28, 1950 to September 15, 1964,
when it was cancelled. NBC, the network that had lost Benny to CBS in 1949,
picked up the show and aired it for one more season, September 25, 1964 to
September 10, 1965. Benny's comic image as a tone-deaf, penny-pinching
bachelor contradicted the real Benny, a philanthropist, devoted husband and
competent violinist who was popular for over 40 years. In addition to his radio
and television work, Benny appeared in over 25 movies, the most critically
acclaimed being To Be Or Not To Be (1942). VIKKI CARR's
popularity in the U.S. peaked with her Top Forty hits of the late 1960s,
including "It Must Be Him" and "Color Me Blue". Beginning in the 1980s,
however, her Spanish language songs became highly popular. Carr received a
Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album, Cosas del Amor, in 1991. In
the year she endorsed this check, Carr was a featured performer on TV's
Hullabaloo! and The Hollywood Palace. Light show through from bank
stamp on verso at "Jack" and the "Be" of Benny. Lightly creased with folds, not
at signatures. Bank cancellation holes, not at signatures. Staple rust stain at
upper left corner. Fine condition.
The image has been altered to conceal sensitive information. These concealing
marks are not present on the check itself.
