Partly Printed Check signed: "Jack Benny", 8¼x3¼. Beverly Hills, California, 1964 December 9.Drawn on Benny's Master Account at the Bank of America for $25.00, payable to the Tamarisk Country Club, Palm Springs, California. Ink endorsement (unknown hand) on verso notes that this is for "Tamarisk Christmas Fund". Tamarisk Country Club opened in 1952 and signed noted golfer Ben Hogan on as the club pro. Tamarisk had an impressive membership roster from the start, including the Marx Brothers, who became lead players in the club's development. Most golf clubs discriminated against Jews. The only golf club in the area that admitted Jews at the time was the Hillcrest Country Club, which opened in 1922. Tamarisk was developed to make a second club open to Jews. The name "tamarisk" was biblical. It is written that Abraham, the first Jew, planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba. From Milton Berle's Associated Press obituary: "Berle belonged to both Tamarisk and Hillcrest country clubs with the Marx brothers, Benny, George Burns and the other great Jewish comedians of his day." Bank stamp on verso shows through, touching "Jack" and the "B" in Benny. Cancellation holes, not near signature. Fine condition.
