JACK BUCHANAN
Shown as the title character in the 1935 version of Brewster's Millions, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Saul/Best wishes/Jack Buchanan". B/w, 8x10. Shown in title role from Brewster's Millions (1935). Collector's ink note on verso dates signature: June 3, 1936. Scottish-born Jack Buchanan (1890-1957) debuted on the London stage in 1912 and on the silver screen five years later. Despite being a Scot, he was often cast as the quintessential Englishman. His film appearances included Monte Carlo (1930), Brewster's Millions (1935) and The Band Wagon (1953). He held his own when paired with other debonair screen personalities like Maurice Chevalier and Fred Astaire. When Brewster's Millions was re-filmed in an English setting, Buchanan was a logical choice for the starring role. The popular story, originating as a 1902 novel, has been made into a play and 7 feature films. Buchanan's was the first talking version. Buchanan was a popular radio announcer during World War II, and again with his Man About Town series in the 1950s. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Fine condition.
