JACK BUCK
Famed baseball and football announcer
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best Wishes/to/Frances/Jack/Buck".
B/w, 5x7. Captioned in lower margin. Sports announcer Jack Buck (1924-2002)
was for many years the voice of baseball's St. Louis Cardinals. In addition
to baseball, Buck announced football and hockey on TV and radio for many years,
covering 11 World Series and 17 Super Bowls. His 1998 autobiography,
That's a Winner, echoed the sentence with which he signaled victories. He
received the Ford Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987,
entitling him to a spot in the "Scribes and Mikemen" exhibit room in the Hall.
On September 17, 2001, a frail and obviously ailing Jack Buck made his last
appearance at a Cardinal home game, reading a patriotic poem inspired by the
events of 9/11. Buck was a combat infantryman in World War II, receiving
a purple heart for a shrapnel wound he received charging across the Remagen
Bridge into Germany in 1945. All of his sons and daughters have entered the
broadcasting business. Son Joe Buck does baseball play by play for Fox
Sports. Fine condition.
