JACK C. CARLISLE
A librarian of San Jose State University writes to John Willis hoping
to influence more research and cataloging of information from the turn of the
century
Typed letter signed: "Jack C. Carlisle" in black felt tip. 1
page, 8½x11. May 22,1974 In full: "Dear Mr. Willis: Your publication
entitled, "Screen World" is very valuable as a reference book in our
large collection, as is also "Theatre World." Very frequently in this
library, students request information on sources where they may find pictures of
scenes in movies or plays, and I wish that these two publications extended
retrospectively back to the turn of the century or shortly thereafter. I realize
that the cost involved in indexing, research, compiling, editing, etc., amount
to great figures, but if I may simply suggest this need, please allow this
letter to do solicitously, just that. There are many valuable pictures,
portraits, illustrations, etc., in thousands of periodicals and books that have
been, and presently are, published, but indexes to them are not available.
Perhaps your obvious influence could stimulate efforts to fulfill these needs.
Please do not feel offended at this observation on my part, but some of our best
indexes such as the A.L.A. Portrait Index, Sear's Song Index, and others have
not kept up to date as great now as at the time of their last publications. I
have written this letter, as a Librarian, in hopes that it may be suggestive to
those dedicated to the publication of valuable references for Libraries. I
should be very appreciative of any information which you may supply in response.
Very truly yours," No further information could be found at this time.
John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in Theatre World from the
beginning, became its chief editor in 1965, holding that position until
2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost theatre and film historians
of the 20th century. While producing (and presenting) the annual Theatre World
Awards, Willis also served on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards.
Theatre World, which received its own Tony for Excellence in
Theatre in 2001, continues under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing
folds. Edges lightly toned. Lightly creased. Ink note, (unknown hand) at top
right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
