JACK DEMPSEY
Black and white with brown hue publicity photograph of Jack Dempsey in a boxing pose.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Walter Jason/Best of Luck Walter/from your friend/Jack Dempsey". B/w with brown hue, 7½x9¾. Photograph by Apeda, New York. One of the most popular fighters in boxing history, Jack Dempsey (1895-1983) reigned as World Heavyweight Champion for more than seven years. The Manassa, Colorado native, who was known as "The Manassa Mauler", captured the world crown by battering champion Jess Willard on July 4, 1919. Dempsey knocked down Willard seven times in the first round before shattering the champ's jaw and knocking him out in the third round. With his lightning-fast fists and vicious punches, Dempsey owned the title until losing a decision to Gene Tunney on September 23, 1926. A year later, Dempsey ended his active boxing career by losing a rematch with Tunney in the famous "long-count fight". After years of exhibition matches, he retired in 1940 to become a boxing and wrestling referee. During WWII, Dempsey served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was elected to the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954. Minor surface creases. Slightly soiled at left background. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 15x24½.
