JACK DEMPSEY
The World Champion is knocked out of the ring by Luis Firpo, September 14, 1923.
Photograph signed: "Jack Dempsey". B/w, 11x8½. Jack Dempsey (1895-1983) was World Heavyweight Champion from 1919-1926. Dempsey won the title from Jess Willard in 1919. Over the next seven years, Dempsey defended his title only six times but made a lot of money in the process, including boxing's first $1 million gate for his fight against Frenchman Georges Carpentier (1921). He lost his title to Gene Tunney on September 23, 1926 in a ten-round decision after which he retired. Named the greatest fighter of the half-century in a 1950 Associated Press poll, he won 60 professional fights, (49 by knockouts), while losing only seven. Although Dempsey ultimately won his fight against Luis Firpo, "the Wild Bull of the Pampas," he benefited from a long count after Firpo knocked him out of the ring in the first round. Dempsey won by a technical knockout one round later. Firpo (1894-1960), the first Latin American and only Argentine boxer to fight for the World Heavyweight Championship, remains a folk hero in Latin America. Grainy image. Light corner creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
