JACK HALEY, SR. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Thom-/This
picture is/from 20th Century's/'Alexander's Ragtime/Band' I won the/1st World
War/singhanded (sic), and/didn't ever soil/my uniform./Best,/Jack Haley".
B/w, 8x10. A year after Haley portrayed Davey Lane in Alexander's Ragtime
Band (1938), he played the part of The Tin Man in The Wizard of
Oz. Haley was not the first choice for the role, however. Buddy Ebsen,
who 23 years later got the role of Jed Clampett in TV's The Beverly
Hillbillies, was badly affected by the aluminum dust in the makeup and had
to give up the part. Jack Haley (1900-1979) was originally a vaudeville star.
Haley also starred in such films as Pigskin Parade (1936) and Rebecca
of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). After last starring role in Vacation in
Reno (1946), Haley did not make another feature film until 1970s
Norwood, although he was frequently seen as a guest star on television
series. His son, Jack Haley, Jr. (1933-2001) was a Hollywood producer. Minor
surface creases and impressions (not evident head on). Fine
condition.
