Hopkins in Wood Green, London, England) was an Emmy-nominated English actor
with almost 90 TV shows and movies to his credit between 1930 and 1974.
Hawkins began acting as a child and made his first movie appearance in Birds
of Prey (1930). He specialized in playing military officers in such films as
The Cruel Sea (1953) , The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and
Lawrnece of Arabia (1962). Hawkins underwent surgery for cancer of the
larynx in 1966. The surgery cost him his voice, but he continued acting - and
chain-smoking - until his death, with his voice dubbed by other actors. Hawkins
received an Emmy nomination for his final role as Justice Gilroy in the TV
adaptation of Leon Uris' QB VII, released one year after his death in
1974. English actress EDNA BEST (1900-1974) was women's swim champion
of Sussex. Initially a stage performer, she entered films in 1931, and is
best remembered as the mother in the original version of Hitchcock's The
Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). Among her other films were
Intermezzo (1939), Swiss Family Robinson (1940) and The Ghost
and Mrs. Muir (1947). Having appeared on London television as early as
1938 (in an adaptation of an Agatha Christie story), she won an Emmy in
1957 for This Happy Breed. Married to actor Herbert Marshall from
1928 to 1940, she was the mother of another actress, Sarah Marshall. Light
surface creases. Lightly toned. Binding holes on right margin of sheet.
Irregularly cut. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
