[JODY LAWRANCE] JACK HEASLEY
$83.23 check made out to the B-movie starlet, but endorsed for her by fellow actor (and skater) Heasley
Check endorsed: "Jody Lawrance", "Jack Heasley", both written in Heasley's hand. 3¼x8½. Hollywood, California, 1953 June 13. Payroll check #454, drawn on the account of Eclipse Films at Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, payable to Jody Laurance [sic] for $83.23. JODY LAWRANCE (1930-1986), born Nona Goddard, was an exotic leading lady of B- movies of the early 1950s, starting out as a lady in distress rescued from Anthony Quinn by John Derek (her frequent co-star) in Mask of the Avenger (1951). That same year she was seen as the love interest of Derek in Family Secret and of Burt Lancaster in Ten Tall Men. Prominent roles followed in The Son of Dr. Jekyll, The Brigand, and the musical All Ashore. The year she signed this check, Lawrance made a major career mistake, accepting the terribly miscast role of title role opposite John Dexter in Captain Smith and Pocahontas. The failure of this film, plus conflicts with her studios, probably shortened her career, and she made only occasional TV appearances after The Leather Saint (1956). Lawrance was the step-daughter of Norma Jean Baker (Marilyn Monroe's) foster mother, and the two lived together briefly in 1941-1942. John Lyne "JACK" HEASLEY (1915-1989) was a figure skater with his twin brother Robert in the Ice Capades feature "Heasley & Heasley", and can be seen in the Ice Capades movie (1942). He played supporting roles in a few films, notably the Dr. Seuss inspired The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. (1953). Heasley has apparently deposited this check on Lawrance's behalf. Cancellation holes. Multiple folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Surface creased. Ink stamps. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
