JACK HOLT
His rare signature in white ink on a 5x7 sepia photo
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Jack Holt". Sepia. 5x7. Jack
Holt (1888-1951) began as a stunt man and bit player in silent films, and
emerged as a major star at Columbia Pictures in the 1920s. He starred in 3
Frank Capra action dramas: Submarine (1928), Flight (1929) and
Dirigible (1931). Soon he was starring in Westerns, as would his
son Tim Holt and daughter Jennifer Holt. The three were heard together on a
radio show, The All-Star Western Theater. Studio executive Harry Cohn,
who had quarreled with Holt, punished him by placing him in a B-serial, Holt
of the Secret Service (1941), but it became a big hit. The ruggedly
handsome, square-jawed Holt was the physical model for Chester Gould's "Dick
Tracy" and Al Capp's "Fearless Fosdick." Playing against type, Holt had a
minor role as a grubby vagrant in Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948),
which featured son Tim in a starring role. Toned. Soiled around edges. Marks
from previous mounting on verso. Otherwise good condition.
