JACK KRAMER
Posed with tennis racket in front of a mantel displaying his trophies
Photograph signed: "to [no name inscribed]/Jack Kramer". B/w 9x6 image, 10x8 overall. American tennis champion Kramer (1921-2009) won the U.S. National Doubles (with Ted Schroeder) in 1940 and 1941 and won the event again in 1943, 1946 and 1947. He also won the doubles title at Wimbledon in 1947 and led the doubles team that won the Davis Cup in 1946 and 1947. Turning pro in 1947, he won the professional singles title in 1948, the world professional singles title in 1949 and the world professional doubles (with Bobby Riggs) in 1949. Kramer, whose name appeared on some 30 million Wilson tennis racquets, began promoting tournaments in 1952 and retired from tennis in 1954 to concentrate on tourneys. Credited with being an influential force in the game, Kramer not only promoted the game but he also helped young players at clinics, helped coach Davis Cup players and worked tirelessly for open tennis, which would allow professional players to compete against amateurs. He accomplished the latter goal in 1968, when the U. S. National became the U. S. Open.  Caption at lower margin. Yellowing from over processing. Otherwise fine condition.
