JACK WARNER
Condolence letter to the sister of friend and employee "Doc" Salomon, killed in London by a German buzz bomb the day before
Typed Letter signed: "Jack", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1944 July 6. On personal letterhead to Irma Salomon, San Francisco. In full: "Words are futile to describe my affection for your dear brother. After so many years of friendship with the most regular fellow I have ever met, his passing is a keen loss to me. You and your family have my heartfelt sympathy. Sincerely". JACK L. WARNER (1892-1978) co-founded Warner Bros. in 1923, and launched the sound era four years later with The Jazz Singer. Jack was head of production at Warner Bros. from 1923-1967, when he sold the studio to Seven Arts. Although he became famous for clashing with producers, writers and stars (including Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney), his studio produced a succession of movie classics during his tenure. Warner was also one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A. M. "Doc" Salomon, who had risen from janitor to studio manager at Warner Bros. and become a close friend of Jack Warner, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. Salomon became head of the Warner Bros. London office during World War II, and was attempting to record one of the incoming German V-1 rockets when one hit and destroyed the company's Teddington studio, killing Salomon. (His photo collection miraculously survived.) Lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
