JACK WARNER
TLS to a daughter of Warner's studio executive and friend A. M. "Doc" Salomon, killed in London 9 days earlier by a German buzz bomb, responding to an inquiry about Salomon's collection of autographed photos.
Typed Letter signed: "Jack Warner", 2 pages (front and verso), 7x10½. No place, 1944 July 14. On personal letterhead to Mrs. Louis Galazzi, San Rafael, California. In full: "Received your letter of July 12 and was glad to hear from you, although I am indeed sorry it had to be under these circumstances. I have always considered Doc to be my best friend, and his passing was great shock to me. I can assure you that I will miss him a great deal, for no one could have had a more loyal friend or a more loyal employee than Doc. He was very happy when he was able to celebrate his 25th anniversary with our Company, and said many times that he hoped he would be able to celebrate his 30th with me in England. From what I have learned to date, the studio was virtually demolished by the robot bomb, and I have not heard what they have been able to salvage. If Doc's book of autographed pictures is still intact, you are most welcome to it and I am writing Mr. Milder today to see that it is set aside for you. I know you would enjoy having it and would take good care of it. I am very glad to do anything I can for Doc's family and am happy to inquire about Doc's autograph book for you. Was rather surprised to learn that you had a little girl and that Doc was a grandfather. I don't remember hearing from him that you had a daughter and while this may be quite late, I want to offer you my congratulations. As soon as I hear from Milder I will get in touch with you again. However, because of censorship restrictions I may not hear anything definite from him for some time to come. Kindest regards and best wishes, Sincerely". Brothers Harry, Sam, Albert and JACK L. WARNER (1892-1978), who co-founded Warner Bros. in 1923, launched the sound era four years later with The Jazz Singer. Jack was head of production at Warner Bros. from 1923-1967, when he sold the studio to Seven Arts. Although he became famous for clashing with producers, writers and stars (including Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney), the studio produced a succession of movie classics during his tenure. Warner was also one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A. M. "Doc" Salomon joined the Burbank Studio of what would become Warner Bros. in 1918, working his way up from janitor to general manager, and then sent to England to manage the company's branch there. As noted in this letter, Jack Warner and Doc Salomon were close friends. Salomon was recording the sound of V-1 "buzz bombs" on July 5, 1944, when one of these weapons hit the studio, leveling it and killing Salomon. Salomon was an avid collector of autographed photos of studio stars; remarkably, the collection itself survived the blast. Lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Fine condition.
