JACK LEMMON and STEVE ALLEN
The two Hollywood personalities pen their names on this album leaf
Inscribed Signature: "Best regards/to Dave-/Jack Lemmon", in black ink and on verso: "Best regards/Steve Allen” , in blue felt tip, 5x4½ album leaf. Jack Lemmon a private school-educated everyman who could play outrageous comedy and wrenching tragedy, JACK LEMMON (1925-2001) burst onto the movie scene as a 1950s Columbia contract player and remained a beloved star until his death. Whether through humor or pathos, he excelled at illuminating the struggles of average men against a callous world; as director Billy Wilder once noted, "There was a little bit of genius in everything he did." Lemmon won the 1956 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role as Ensign Pulver inMister Roberts (1955). He also won the 1974 Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying garment manufacturer Harry Stoner in Save the Tiger (1973). Lemmon received Best Actor Oscar nominations for Some Like It Hot (1959), The Apartment (1960), Days of Wine and Roses (1962), The China Syndrome (1979), Tribute (1980) and Missing (1982). Breaking into showbiz as a radio disc jockey, the multitalented STEVE ALLEN (1921-2000) learned that inserting humor into his broadcasts could drawn more viewers in than merely announcing. In order to supply himself with an endless stream of material, he memorized every joke book and "college humor" magazine that he could get his hands on; the result was his uncanny ability to conjure up precisely the right wisecrack at the right time. Allen received his first network exposure in 1949, and he was also featured in several films, including Down Memory Lane (1949) and I'll Get By (1950). In 1953, Allen was hired to host a local late-night program on New York's WNBC-TV, which later developed into the NBC network's Tonight Show. Allen was also an accomplished composer (he wrote over 7,400 songs, including his signature song This Could Be The Start of Something Big) and piano player, and he filled up his spare time by writing more than 50 books as well as plays and magazine articles. Allen was married to actress Jayne Meadows from 1954 until his death. Both Allen and Meadows were nominated for Emmy Awards for a joint guest appearance on the TV series LA Law, and the couple also appeared together on Allen's memorable PBS miniseries Meeting of Minds (1977-1981).
