JACK LEMMON and FRED ASTAIRE
Their signatures on a TV Time cover touting their appearance as George and Ira Gershwin
Magazine Cover signed: "Fred Astaire", "Jack Lemmon", 8x11. Signed by their images on TV Time of January 16-22, 1972. Cover story: "Singing Those Gershwin Years". A private school-educated everyman who could play outrageous comedy and wrenching tragedy, JACK LEMMON (1925-2001) burst onto the movie scene as a 1950s Columbia contract player and remained a beloved star until his death. Whether through humor or pathos, he excelled at illuminating the struggles of average men against a callous world; as director Billy Wilder once noted, "There was a little bit of genius in everything he did." Lemmon won the 1955 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his role as Ensign Pulver in Mister Roberts. He also won the 1973 Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying garment manufacturer Harry Stoner in Save the Tiger. Lemmon received Best Actor Oscar nominations for Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Days of Wine and Roses, The China Syndrome, Tribute and Missing. FRED ASTAIRE (1899-1987), born Frederick Austerlitz, began his career touring in the vaudeville circuit with his sister Adele as a dancing partner. After many stage hits, he was given a screen test, resulting in the famous verdict: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." In the 1930s, he was paired with Ginger Rogers in ten films and continued to dominate musical films in the 1940s. Astaire was a recipient of a special Academy Award in 1949 for his contribution to films and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Towering Inferno in 1974. He died at 88 in 1987. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
