JACK "LUCKY" LOHRKE
Printed card signed in ink, pictured with a bat in New York Giants uniform
Printed Art signed in ink: "Jack Lohrke". Color, 3½x5 heavy card. When people talk about Jack Lohrke (1924-2005), they don't focus on his baseball career, although he was a capable third baseman in seven Major League seasons (1947-1953), five with the New York Giants followed by two with the Phillies. Instead, they tell of how "Lucky" Lohrke dodged death six times, five of them during World War II. First, he was bumped from a military transport flight which crashed with no survivors. In combat on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge, soldiers on both sides of Lohrke were slain, while he escaped injury. Finally, as a minor leaguer with the Spokane Indians in 1946, he was on a bus trip with his teammates when he learned -at a rest stop - that he'd been promoted to a higher league. Lohrke left the bus, which later plummeted into a ravine, killing most of the passengers and seriously injuring the rest. No wonder Lohrke was called "Lucky." By age 22, he had cheated death six times. Red ink edge has been added. Otherwise, fine condition.
