Shown in Yankee uniform, giving the finger to the fans in Yankee Stadium
Photograph signed: "Jack McDowell". Color, 8x10. Jack McDowell pitched his first eight Major League seasons for the Chicago White Sox. In a four-year stretch (1990-1993), he won 73 games and was named to three All-Star teams, capping it off with a League-leading 22-win season and Cy Young Award in 1993. Traded to the Yankees in 1995, McDowell had a respectable 15-10 record, but didn't meet the expectations of Yankee fans. On July 18, he was hammered by the White Sox at Yankee Stadium and driven from the mound in the fifth inning. Booed lustily, he responded with the gesture shown here. McDowell said later of the incident, "At that point, my relationship with the fans wasn't going to get much worse than it already was. That incident actually helped set things straight between me and the fans, to let people know where I was coming from. I truly believe that once all the BS was put aside and everybody was done trying to make more out of that than it was, that's what came out of it." McDowell, a talented rock musician always known as a rebel, spent two more seasons in the Majors (with Cleveland and Anaheim), but was hampered by injuries and never regained peak form. Fine condition.
