1997 Pulitzer Prize for History
Autograph letter signed: "Jack N. Rakove", in black ink,
8½x11. June 12, 1997. Stanford, California. In part: "Dear Mr. Cleary,
Thanks for your nice note about my recent literary good fortune. I am enclosing
a signed copy of the order card [item not included], as you requested,
but I'm afraid that as a mere working scholar, I don't have any publicity photos
handy to autograph". Jack N. Rakove (b.1947) is the William Robertson
Coe Professor of History and American Studies and political science professor at
Stanford. His book Original Meanings: Politics and Ideas in the Making of
the Constitution won the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in History. In an interview
about his work, Rakove explained, "The best way to maintain the
fidelity of the Constitution is to reconstruct what its language originally
meant to its adopters." His newest book Revolutionaries:
A New History of the Invention of America was published in 2010. Light
