JACK NORTON
In the year he sent this letter, Norton appeared in his last film,
Two Knights from Brooklyn
Autograph Letter Signed: "Jack Norton", 8x7¼ ruled sheet. No
place, 1949 December 3, Saturday. To "Dear Bill". In full:
"Note and application rec'd. Am sending picture under seperate (sic)
cover and trust you receive same in good order. Many thanks for your 'character'
membership application. And trust I may meet with the approval of other
'characters'. It isn't a case of 'like's (sic) and dislikes' to-day - its
(sic) a matter of tolerance, and rates with me as one of God's blessings.
Until we meet again, I am yours in all friendship. The Annonymous (sic)
Alcoholic". In the year he sent this letter, Norton appeared in his
last film, Two Knights from Brooklyn, in which he played Reginald von
Nostrum, the drunk, a role he had originated in 1943's Taxi, Mister.
Pencil-mustached actor Jack Norton (1882-1958) was best known for playing
reeling, incoherent comic drunks (often in evening clothes and a satin high
hat). Norton, who made his first films in 1934, played his first role as a drunk
that year (in Finishing School). Ironically, Norton was a teetotaler
in real life. Slightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at the "k" of
Jack. Slightly soiled. ¼-inch tear at upper left blank edge, irregular lower
edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
