Cachet pictures Lee DeForest. In 1958, Jack Kilby (1923-2005) went to work
at Texas Instruments. Within a year, the electrical engineer had invented a
monolithic integrated circuit that he called a "microchip" (patent
#3,138,743). He also developed the first pocket calculator,
"Pocketronic". One of over 60 inventions Kilby patented, the microchip made
high-speed computing and communication systems possible. Kilby was awarded the
2000 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his part in the invention of the integrated
circuit". Fine condition.
