First Day Cover honoring Progress in Electronics, 11-cent stamp affixed,
postmarked New York, New York, July 10, 1973, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Cachet
pictures Lee DeForest. In 1958, Kilby (1923-2005) went to work at Texas
Instruments. Within a year, the electrical engineer had invented a monolithic
integrated circuit that he called a "microchip" (patent #3,138,743). He
also developed the first pocket calculator, "Pocketronic". One of over 60
inventions Kilby patented, the microchip made high-speed computing and
communication systems possible. Kilby was awarded the 2000 Nobel Prize in
Physics "for his part in the invention of the integrated circuit". Slightly
creased. Fine condition.
