JACK SHARKEY
Photograph of a smiling Sharkey posing shirtless, signed with good luck and dated 1970
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/Ernest Manfred/Good luck always/Jack Sharkey/9/18/70", in black felt tip, B/w 7x9. Jack Sharkey (1902-1994) was heavyweight boxing champion (1932-1933). He defeated Max Schmeling, and is the only man to have fought both Jack Dempsey (1927) and Joe Louis (1936). He retired with a record of 38-14-3, with 13 knockouts. Sharkey toured with baseball great Ted Williams in fly fishing promotions. Asked whether he preferred boxing or fishing, Sharkey replied that boxing paid more, but that the fish don't hit back. He entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994, just months before his death. A. M. "Doc" Salomon, a friend of studio mogul Jack Warner who rose to head the London branch of Warner Bros. studios, compiled an extensive collection of celebrity autographs during his nearly 30 years with the studio. A V-1 rocket demolished his London studio in July 1944 and killed Salomon, but his photo collection miraculously survived. Light surface creases. Corners worn and creased. Lightly soiled. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
