JACK SMITH. Inscribed signature: "For Jim -/Jack Smith", 5x3 card. Typed caption at top edge. Newspaper photo (b/w, 1x1) affixed in lower right, newspaper clipping (2¼x1) on verso. Ink note (unknown hand): "May 25, 1952". Radio crooner and actor Jack Smith (1915-2006), who was sometimes known as "Smilin' Jack Smith", had his own 15-minute daily radio show from 1945-1953. Smith began singing professionally at age 15, singing lead in a trio at the Ambassador Hotel's Cocoanut Grove (the group called themselves "The Three Ambassadors"). The group sang in clubs from coast to coast and appeared in several films, including Walking on Air (1936), as well as on popular radio programs of the day. After the trio broke up in 1939, Smith went solo and had a number of hits, including "I'll Be With You in Apple Blossom Time", "Civilization" and "Jack, Jack, Jack". He returned to films in 1949's Make Believe Ballroom, and two years later he starred opposite Doris Day in On Moonlight Bay (1951). Following the heydey of radio, Smith turned to television, hosting You Asked for It (1958-1959) and 1981 and appearing as a guest star on a number of TV series, from The Andy Grifith Show (1965) to Charlie's Angels (1977). Slightly soiled. Clipping on verso shows through at upper right, touching "h" of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
