JACK VALENTI
President Johnson's former Special Assistant and President of the Motion Picture Association of America signs this First Day Cover honoring the 50th Anniversary of Talking Pictures
First day cover signed: "Jack Valenti" in black felt. 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the 50th Anniversary Year of Talking Pictures. Postmarked Hollywood, California, October 6, 1977. 13c stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Jack Valenti (1921-2007) mounted successful advertising campaigns for US oil companies before meeting US Senate Democratic leader Lyndon Johnson in 1952. Thereafter, he specialized in political advertising, worked on the 1960 Presidential campaign, and became Special Assistant to President Johnson in 1963. It was said of the passionate LBJ loyalist, that if the President had dropped a hydrogen bomb on a foreign city, Valenti would have called it "urban renewal." Valenti left the White House in 1966 to become the third President of the Motion Picture Association of America, serving in that role until his 2004 retirement. He played a key role in developing the rating system, and was the seventh-highest paid executive of a US trade association ($1.35 million per year). Toned. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
