JACKIE COOGAN. Match Book signed: "Jackie Coogan", 4½x1½.
Ink note on verso (unknown hand) dates signature "4-8-68". Child actor Jackie
Coogan (1914-1984), a vaudeville stage performer since age four, was tapped
by Charlie Chaplin to appear in A Day's Pleasure in 1919. Two years
later, Coogan starred with Chaplin in his masterpiece, The Kid,
beginning a rise to stardom that would result in Coogan becoming one of the
highest paid film actors of the day. The two actors reunited in 1972, when
Chaplin returned to Hollywood to receive a life achievement Academy Award.
Coogan's other film credits include Oliver Twist (1922), Tom
Sawyer (1930), Huckleberry Finn (1931), The Buster Keaton
Story (1957), Girl Happy (1965), The Shakiest Gun in the West
(1968), Cahill, United States Marshal (1973) and Won Ton Ton, the Dog
Who Saved Hollywood (1976). On the small screen, Coogan is perhaps best
remembered for his role as Uncle Fester on The Addams Family
(1964-1966), but he also appeared in a number of other series, including
Playhouse 90, Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents,
Love, American Style, Gunsmoke, McMillan & Wife and
Police Story. Staple hole and striking plate at right. Slightly soiled.
