JACKIE COOPER and EL BRENDEL
Both sign a 5x4 piece of Hollywood Canteen note paper.
Signatures: "Jackie/Cooper", "El Brendel", 5½x4¼ stationery
from the Hollywood Canteen. There is a third, unidentified signature. Printed
caption: "Write a letter home." Child film star JACKIE COOPER
(1922-2011) appeared first in Hal Roach's "Our Gang" comedies, then earned an
Oscar nomination as Skippy (1931). He co-starred with Wallace
Beery in several films of the 1930s, including The Champ and
Treasure Island. As an adult, his film opportunities diminished, but
Cooper had two hit TV series in the 1950s, The People's Choice and
Hennessy. He won an Emmy (1973) for directing episodes of
M*A*S*H. Cooper played newspaper editor Perry White in all four of
the Christopher Reeves Superman movies (1981-1987). He also produced
several TV programs. EL BRENDEL (1890-1964) was a vaudeville entertainer
with a trademark false Swedish accent, given to expressions like "Yumpin
Yiminy." From 1929 to 1931 he appeared in many Fox Studio films in comic
relief roles. Occasionally, as in Just Imagine (1930), he was the
top-billed star. Later he made two-reel comedies for Columbia Pictures,
including Blitzkiss (1941). In the 1950s he made a comeback with guest
spots on television. Fold crease through signature. Lightly creased at upper
left corner. Lightly worn at lower and right margin. Lightly soiled. Otherwise,
fine condition.
